TOEFL
back
The Test of English as a Foreign Language rates the applicant's proficiency in the English language. The TOEFL is only one formal criterion.

There are two versions of the test:

-   The TOEFL Internet based test assesses reading, listening, speaking and writing skills and lasts about 4 hours.
-   The TOEFL Paper based test assesses listening, structure (grammar), reading and writing and takes about 3.5 hours.

The Internet based test is far more common than the Paper based test as the Paper based test is only offered where facilities for the Internet based test are not available.

Internet based test

The TOEFL Internet based test has four sections and takes about 4 hours to complete:

Reading     Measures the ability to understand academic reading matter.
Listening     Measures the ability to understand English as it is used at university level.
Speaking     Measures the ability to speak English.
Writing     Measures the ability to write in a way that is appropriate for university course work.
