Founded in 1965, the Aberdeen Business School celebrated its fortieth year in 2005, and continues to build on this firm foundation with its formidable reputation for a pragmatic approach to higher education. The School is part of The Robert Gordon University (RGU), which has regularly been acclaimed as the top new university in Scotland, with one of the best graduate employability records of all UK universities. The Robert Gordon University has won awards as a top university for graduate employment with consistently high rankings in the university league tables, as shown in The Times Good University Guide 2008 (http://extras.timesonline.co.uk/gug/gooduniversityguide.php?sort=PROSPECTS).

Notably, it was the first new university in Scotland to gain AMBA accreditation for its MBA Programme and has a firmly established reputation for providing employers with qualified individuals with exceptional professional skills.

The Aberdeen Business School is one of the largest business schools in the United Kingdom and is structured into the following Academic Departments:

Associated with the departments, there are a number of satellite applied Research Centres in the field of Entrepreneurship, Knowledge Management, Tourism, Public Policy, and Transport Policy.

The Placement Office at the Aberdeen Business School works throughout the year placing students from a variety of our courses with both local and national employers.

Consultancy
Executive Development at Aberdeen Business School
The School has six Centres of Excellence that are active in research and consultancy work for local, national and international organisations. These Centres include:

Centre for International Labour Market Studies (CILMS)
Centre for Knowledge Management (CKM)
Centre for Public Policy and Management (CPPM)
Research Centre for Transport Policy (CfTP)
Scottish Centre of Tourism (SCoT)

Faculty Excellence
A teaching faculty that blends academic expertise with the credibility gained from current business, professional and consultancy activities supports the School’s programmes. The staff also have an excellent record in attracting research funding from such bodies as the Arts and Humanities Research Board, Economic and Social Research Council, the European Commission and UNESCO.

Staff are also on the editorial boards of numerous international journals, including the Journal of Forensic Accounting, Journal of International Trade Law and Policy, Libri: International Journal of Libraries and Information Services, and Journal of International Business and Economics Research.

Many of the School’s courses have a European and International focus and attract students from all parts of the UK, the EU and further afield. The resulting mix of students, cultures and customs creates a modern cosmopolitan study environment from which staff and students benefit.

Requirements / Application
Candidates applying for admission to a postgraduate taught course should normally possess either:

  • a degree/Honours degree or degree-equivalent qualification in a relevant degree subject, awarded by a UK University or recognised Overseas Institution, or

  • qualifications of an approved Professional Body or Institution, or

  • relevant industrial, commercial or professional experience at a level sufficient to justify exemption from the normal requirements


  • In certain circumstances, students with ordinary degrees but with extensive appropriate work-experience within the sector can be admitted to a particular course at the discretion of the Course Leader and the Postgraduate Management Team. In such circumstances, applicants are required to provide a portfolio for the Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning (APEL).

    In very exceptional circumstances, applications may be accepted from those with a significant body of experience but without a degree. In such cases, a full portfolio of evidence is required for APEL.

    Postgraduate programmes with additional entry requirements include:

    Master of Business Administration
    To gain admission to the programme applicants will normally:

    - have three years relevant work experience
    - hold a first degree, at Honours level, preferably in the top 1st class banding
    - be able to demonstrate competence in oral and written English

    MSc Human Resource Management
    This course will appeal to a wide range of potential candidates:

    - graduates with a good honours degree
    applicants with significant management experience (8-10years)
    - the programme is an ideal vehicle for overseas students seeking a postgraduate qualification from a reputed UK University

    Before submitting the university application form, students should complete the course questionnaire. Students are expected to attend an informal interview before an offer is given for the course to obtain essential information on course requirements. For students outwith the local area, this will be undertaken via the telephone or email.
     
    Lecturers / Professors
    Aberdeen Business School employs over 250 staff. This includes the senior management and over 200 full-time and part-time academic staff across eight departmental subject areas. In addition, there are the staff members who are appointed as Professors, Teaching Fellows and Research Fellows.
