BI is a private independent foundation and the larger share of its costs (around 85%) is covered by tuition fees. Government funding has increased substantially over the past three years.
BI offers undergraduate and graduate courses in the areas of Management, Business Administration, Economics and Marketing at the Bachelor’s, Master’s and Doctoral levels. It has its own niche schools in the areas of insurance, retailing, banking and finance, and shipping. BI offers open and tailor-made programmes as continuing education.
The school has developed into a first-class, future-oriented “School of Management” and attracts an ever-growing number of students: with around 9500 full-time and 10,000 part-time students, BI is one of the larger academic institutions in Norway and one of the largest business school in Europe. About half of the students are women.
Accreditation and recognition
BI Norwegian Business School is fully accredited and recognized by the Norwegian Ministry of Education as a degree awarding private academic institution.
BI was the first academic institution in Norway to receive international accreditation when awarded the EQUIS accreditation by the European Foundation for Management Development in 1999. The School was reaccredited in 2005.
BI is recognized by the US Department of Education for eligibility and certification for participation in programs authorized by the US Higher Education Act of 1965.
The school is a member of the EFMD (European Foundation for Management Development) and AACSB (the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business)
BI’s campus structure
BI Norwegian Business School has a unique position in the Norwegian Higher Education system. It is one the larger academic institution in the country and has a presence in every major Norwegian town through its system of local campuses. This is an amazing achievement for a private institution charging tuition fees in an egalitarian country like Norway where higher education is provided for free by public universities.
BI’s main campus can be found in Oslo. This recently opened ‘Business School of the Future’ is the knowledge hub of the system and offers BI’s entire portfolio of courses from the bachelor’s to the doctoral level. The vast majority of BI’s permanent faculty is stationed here. At the Oslo campus you will find around 8000 students.
The schools in the rest of the country vary in size from larger colleges in bigger towns like Stavanger, Bergen, Trondheim and Kristiansand and smaller regional schools in smaller towns. Both type of schools offer programmes at the bachelor’s level and tailor-made continuing and executive education programmes to local business life.
BI is a future oriented business school. This not only shows in the research and teaching carried out but also in the commitment to constantly update and improve teaching facilities. In August 2005, the school opened its new main campus in Oslo, which in every respect is the “Business School of the Future”. This campus is centrally located in an emerging and pulsating business area in Oslo and all the international programmes are taught here.
BI Norwegian Business School’s new campus was designed by Niels Torp who is one of Norway’s most famous architects. Niels Torp has won internationally acclaim for his design of buildings like the SAS headquarter in Stockholm, the British Airways headquarter in London, Oslo Airport at Gardermoen and the Olympic skating hall in Hamar.
A top-ranking research institution
With 330 full-time faculty members of which more than 80 hold a full professorship, BI hosts Norway’s largest and one of Europe largest and most productive academic environments in the area of business economics and administration, marketing and management. BI Faculty cherish the concept of ‘bi-lingualism’ meaning that they are equally proficient in speaking both the language of business and the language of academics.
BI’s faculty is required to meet high academic standards, publish in internationally recognised scholarly and professional journals and take part in international research networks.
Measured in academic publications BI’s academic focus has been targeted on areas core to European business schools, in particular the fields of strategy, marketing and finance.
